Holiday Gift Guide | Fiction Edition (2017)

Hi everyone! So.. it is that time of year and I decided to bring back my gift guides for you all. I really like doing these kind of posts because it allows me to talk about a bunch of books and give mini reviews.. similar to if you were a customer in a bookstore and I was giving you a quick sales pitch on the title. I didn't do a fiction edition last year since I was mostly reading "grip-lit" but this year there are some fun titles that I think would make fantastic gifts for any book lover or even non-reader in your life. These are titles that I haven't spoken about before on the blog because I want to feature some newer titles for you all. I plan on making other gift guides so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for those posts. Let's get started!

Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami (✮✮✮✮✮ - 5/5 stars)
Publishing Date: May 9, 2017
Publisher: Doubleday Canada
Pages: 240

My Pitch: Murakami is hands down my favorite author ever and it's a no brainer that I would recommend one of his books right off the bat. This is short story collection of 7 stories about men who find themselves without women. I am a bit biased because the text is partially translated by a professor of mine: Ted Goossen, and I'm a big Murakami fan, but I really enjoyed this short story collection. Samsa in Love is my favorite one. It just has the magical aura that Murakami's writing always has and I love the way he takes simple every day people and offers them such poignant backgrounds and inner narratives. The way he describes "feelings" and just how one interacts with another individual is just so special. I can't describe it more than that, but Murakami's writing always feels quite magical to me. If you haven't read Murakami before, this is a nice way to get into his work via short stories. This is must-have for your shelf!

Uncommon Type: Some Stories by Tom Hanks (✮✮✮✮ - 4/5 stars)
Publishing Date: October 17, 2017
Publisher: Knopf Canada
Pages: 416

My Pitch: There are tons of people in Hollywood who I really admire and Tom Hanks is definitely one of them. He is just a genuinely good person and I was so excited to learn that he was going to be writing a fiction book of short stories. (Do you see a theme in my gift guide recommendations so far?) When celebrities tackle writing, it often comes in the form of a biography/memoir so this was quite a nice departure. There are 17 short stories and they all follow various individuals and a typewriter is the common denominator between all of them. There's even a Holiday-esque short story titled "Christmas Eve 1953" - the story examines the night before Christmas in the Beuell household. It was such a sweet story and I really liked how Davey kept the secret of Santa Claus alive and well for his younger sister Jill. The typewriter in this specific story is where the kids write their letters for Santa. As everyone gathers to bed, Virgil Beuell, the patriarch, stays up late to call an old friend named Bud. They had previously spent a Christmas Eve together when they both served together and in a small phone call exchange and moments of Virgil heading to bed, you get a sense of what they experienced as soldiers and how their experiences still affect their day to day life. It's a bittersweet story in a way because the Beuell family is well as they approach the new year, but what Virgil and Bud went through years ago still lingers and has a sense that it will always linger. I think this was my favorite story out of all of them simply because of how I felt when I finished reading it. Hanks' writing is just beautiful and I'm genuinely pleased with this lovely collection of short stories. I think there is something in this book for everyone and there's also a nice added touch of photographs throughout the collection as well.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (✮✮✮✮✮ - 5/5 stars)
Publishing Date: February 3, 2015
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: 448

My Pitch: I listened to Isabelle and Viann's story a few years back on audiobook, but the story still stays with me daily. I always find an opportunity to recommend this book whenever I can because it was such a beautiful and gut-wrenching story that lingers after you've read it (and in my case: for years). I loved reading about how two sisters dealt with WWII. Viann happy with her husband and child finds her world forever changed when her husband is sent off to fight the war, and she has to handle a Nazi-occupied France, even going so far as having one of the soldiers forcibly stationed with her. In contrast, you have determined and stubborn Isabelle who wants to do more with the current situation that help her sister Viann. She feels helpless and wants a more important role during these difficult times. Their relationship is tested time and time again, and there are so many moments that literally had me bawling my eyes out. I just loved this book so much. I will also say that those I have recommended this book to also love it. So basically, everyone loves it and if you haven't read it yet, you really need to change that ASAP.

That's it from me folks! I plan on making more of these holiday edition guides so be sure to look out for them. Let me know in the comments below what is your number one fiction gift recommendation for this holiday season!

Review: Kingdom by A.M. Johnson

Kingdom (Avenues Ink Series Book 2) by A.M. Johnson

Publishing Date: October 4, 2017
Publisher: A.M. Johnson
Audiobook Duration: 10 hrs and 36 mins
Narrated by: Rock Engle, Samantha Summers
Romance

The Premise from the Author: "Kelly Kavanagh was Liam's happily ever after, his loyal princess. A lifeline to something better than any high school dropout could ever hope for...until the day she left to pursue a dream that didn't include him and slowly his kingdom crumbled to the ground. Liam O'Connell was the sun to Kelly's everlasting moon, her painted prince. A strong and devoted soul to fight the war she was slowly losing against herself...until his promises had become lies and her dream was the only way she would ever survive. They have more than just miles and time between them now. The twin fortresses they've built around their hearts are next to impossible to scale. But, when two parallel fates collide in life and in death, will the impact be powerful enough to break down their self-imposed walls? Every love story starts with "once upon a time", but in real life there are no fairytale endings, and the prince who rescues you...will never wear a crown" (AMJ).

My overall thoughts and review: I reviewed the first book in the Avenues Ink Series not too long ago: Possession, and I absolutely loved it. I'm excited to continue on with the stories because I just love learning more about the O'Connell family and seeing if each brother gets his HEA. After Declan's story, is Liam's story. You got hints of Liam in the previous book, and we learned from the previous book that he had a very strong and intense relationship, but it ended. He was now drowning his sorrows with a new person every night. Liam's way of escaping his past doesn't last very long when Kelly ends up back in town because her father is dying. We learn that they both came together and planned a HEA ever after together, but things went south when Liam decided to stay around for his family, while Kelly felt the need to leave and pursue her modelling career to get away from hers. They obviously never got over each other and I have to admit, in the beginning, some scenes where Liam expresses his disdain for her returning really broke my heart. You can see how much it pained Kelly and how much she loved him and cared for him. The story shifted back and forth between how they met, their relationship, and where they were today. A sudden accident leaves Kelly in town and she turns to Liam to help with recovery. They slowly find their way back to each other and it was really sweet seeing them just find each other again. I will say I really enjoyed learning their back stories and just learning more about their families. Their families made up such a huge part of their personality and shaped their decisions. It was a nice contrast with Mrs. O'Connell and the fathers in their lives. I really liked seeing Declan and Paige again too. I'm looking forward to picking up the third book to read about the final O'Connell brother and I hope I get some snippets of Kelly and Liam's happily ever after in it. As always, Johnson writes with such great detail and emotion that you end up falling in love with so many passages. I really enjoy her writing and I can't wait to read Poet next! Also, I opted for the Audiobook version and I think both narrators did a fantastic job. I would definitely recommend you pick up the audio version!

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮✮ (4/5 stars)

[Teaser] Love So Wild by Marquita Valentine

Love So Wild, an all-new contemporary romance from Marquita Valentine is coming December 13th!

Pilot Elijah Lawson always knew he’d return to Jessamine, marry a hometown girl and settle into very predictable life. After all, he made promises to his parents that once he’d gotten his fill of adventure that he would do exactly that… and Eli was a man of his word. Only he's never been able to get the bewitching redhead he’d fallen hard for two years earlier out of his head and he’s afraid that no woman in Jessamine will ever measure up.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop his family from trying to set him up with every single woman in town… until Skye Holland shows up on his doorstep.

The only reason Skye Holland moved back to North Carolina was so she could do the right thing for her one year old son. A boy, after all, needed his father, while she… she simply needed a fresh start. But first, she has to let Eli know that their red-hot affair had consequences. Consequences she has no intentions of repeating, no matter how many old feelings come rushing to the surface when they’re together.

Too bad for Skye that Elijah has other ideas and he’s not going to let this second chance at love get away again.

Review: One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Publishing Date: May 30, 2017
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Pages: 368
Young Adult Contemporary Mystery/Thriller

The Premise from the Publisher: "Pay close attention and you might solve this. On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher. And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app. Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose? Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them" (RH).

My overall thoughts and review: I want to preface this review by saying that I finished this in one sitting. It definitely hooked me from the start and I could not put it down. It has quite an addictive quality to it and it is fast paced and easy to follow, regardless of following four different POVs. So while I enjoyed reading it and could not put it down, there were a few things that didn't really sit well with me. The parents in this book ranged from not bad to pretty freaking horrible. I just felt sick to my stomach with some of the remarks that Addy got from her mom. Addy's mom consistently reminds her that her boyfriend, Jake, is too good for her and that she should not screw it up because she's not smart enough to get into a good school and earn something for herself. My heart really broke for Addy in these moments, and I'm glad she had her sister for support, but in a way, I was hoping there would be some comeuppance for her mother. But so many scenes when Addy was being told a certain thing from her mother, I feel like there should've been something in the plot or said by another character that no, that isn't true. So not only did Addy need that reassurance, but I think as readers, we do too. Because it was just left lingering in the air and I'm sure this is a likely occurrence for some readers sadly. Also, even though the story focused on the four individuals, I would've liked to learn more about Simon, and not so quickly towards his end. What did his parents think of his app? How could someone get away with an app like that to be quite honest? It didn't name people specifically, but it did a lot of harm within the student body. I think if we got his parent's side of the story and how they felt about that, it would've added an interesting layer to the story. I also felt when it did wrap up, it moved forward with a sort of epilogue, when I would've liked to see more references to support for mental health and how to prevent what happened in the future. It was more so, the case is solved and where are the four now? I think a lot of things seemed easily resolved, but it didn't feel resolved to me? When stories tackle such dark topics as mental health, depression, and bullying, there should really be a how-to move forward from it and a type of learning component. How can the characters learn moving forward, but also how can readers reading the book learn from it too. I will say though, seeing how the four came together as friends really intrigued me and I really loved Nate and Bronwyn's storyline specifically. I loved seeing all of them come out of their shell and become more than what the app/the media perceived them to be. It definitely has a feel of Pretty Little Liars meets 13 Reasons Why.. so if you are interested in a story-line along those lines, I would definitely recommend this to you. You definitely won't be able to put it down!

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮½ (3.5/5 stars)

Review: Artemis by Andy Weir

Artemis by Andy Weir

Publishing Date: November 14, 2017
Publisher: Audible Studios (Audible Exclusive)
Audiobook Duration: 8 hrs and 59 mins
Narrator: Rosario Dawson
Contemporary Science Fiction

The Premise from the Author: "Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself - and that now her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first" (Weir).

My overall thoughts and review: I want to preface this review by saying that I don't always gravitate towards science fiction reads.  I really enjoyed The Martian and I knew that when this was coming out I definitely wanted to pick it up.  I've dabbled with some sci-fi ,but I'm not well versed in what would be consider intense sci-fi, nor can I make the judgement call about whether or not certain things are probable in the text. I really like Weir because it doesn't feel overly sci-fi. Weir writes in a way that is compelling and fast paced, and he writes about science where it doesn't go over my head. When I saw that there was an exclusive audible version narrated by Rosario Dawson, it was a no-brainer. I'm so glad I opted for the audiobook version because Dawson brings Jazz to life in such a wonderful way. She brought every character to life and kudos to her for doing some fantastic accents. From the get go, I just loved how fun Jazz was. She is sassy, does-not-hold-back badass, and an all around a very interesting protagonist. She doesn't want to be the hero of the day. She simply wants to pay her debts and be filthy rich. How she does it though is being a porter by day, but also a smuggler by night. However, trouble strikes when she finds herself in hot water when a heist goes wrong. Things quickly escalate to being on the run from murderers, the people in charge of Artemis wanting to find something wrong to deport her, and an all around hot mess. There's so much world building for Artemis and I just loved how Weir unraveled everything. The story also has sections with letters and emails between her and someone who started off as a pen-pal. He is basically her bestfriend and I loved reading those parts because they revealed parts of Jazz's past while simultaneously working with her present. Besides Jazz, I really loved some of the secondary characters. I especially enjoyed Svoboda, Dale, and Jazz's dad. They added so much to the narrative and I definitely loved the scenes when they interacted with Jazz. I will say that there are some similarities like sarcastic tone between Jazz and Mark (from The Martian), which might annoy some people, and that's why I think the audio version does such a great job. You have Dawson narrating and making it a clear distinct voice from Mark. All in all, I really enjoyed this book. If you want an incredibly sassy protagonist who is basically a Moon pirate, this is the read for you! And please, opt for the audio version. Dawson does such an amazing job! I want her to narrate all books moving forward.

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮✮ (4/5 stars)

Available for purchase at:
Audible, Chapters/Indigo, Kobo, Amazon, Kindle, and Book Depository (Free Worldwide Shipping)

[Teaser] The British Knight by Louise Bay

The British Knight, an all-new contemporary
romance by Louise Bay is coming December 5th!!!

When I’m offered the chance to leave New York to live in London for three months, I can’t pack my suitcase fast enough.

As soon as I touch down I’m obsessing over red telephone boxes, palaces and all the black cabs.

But my favorite place is the tube. It’s wall-to-wall hot British men in suits.

When I’m offered a temporary job working for a barrister, I say, sign me up.

On my first commute into work, it’s a total accident when I lose my balance and fall against the most handsome Brit alive. He’s as charming as James Bond and as suave as Mr. Darcy. I want to lick tea from his hard abs and listen to his accent all night long.

Turns out Mr. Handsome is my new boss. And his attitude isn’t as hot as his gorgeous face, broad shoulders and tight ass. He’s brooding, short-tempered and the most arrogant man I’ve ever met.

As we’re fighting, out of nowhere he kisses me. And I’m pretty sure I see fireworks over Big Ben and hear God Save the Queen.

I wasn’t looking for the fairytale but I might have found my knight in shining armor. The problem is he lives an ocean away.

Review: Hooking Up by Helena Hunting

Hooking Up by Helena Hunting

Publishing Date: November 7, 2017
Publisher: Swerve
Pages: 304
Romance

The Premise from the Author: "Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw. Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him. They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical" (HH).

My overall thoughts and review: So full disclaimer first: I totally should have read the first book Shacking Up first. Even though it's not technically a series, it takes place in the same world and reading Hooking Up kind of spoils it for me, but I'm ok with that. So you don't need to read the Shacking Up first, but it does help with world building and learning about characters. I immediately downloaded a copy of Shacking Up as soon as I finished this one because I legit am in love with Helena Hunting's writing. To be honest, I went a crazy binge buy of all of her backlist titles on Kobo and I have no regrets. I wasn't sure going into the book what to expect and I honestly expected a traditional HEA contemporary romance. What I did not expect was how many laugh out loud hilarious moments there were and how much character background I would get for certain characters. I loved that the world building was perfect and I honestly felt as if when I was reading it, it was a movie playing out in my head. Everything was so perfectly described and it all felt so vivid to me. The premise of the story follows Amie, who on her wedding day, hears her new-husband getting a blow job over the speakers for all the attendees to hear. WHAT A JERK. No seriously, Armstrong is a big jerk and goodness, I was so glad it wasn't going to be a redemption story with him because I had a feeling from chapter one, I was not going to like him. She finds herself immediately on a plane and taking what would've been their honeymoon together, alone. However, things don't always pan out the way you want, and she finds herself going to Bora Bora with Lex, who is Armstrong's cousin. You quickly learn that the night Armstrong met Amie, Lex was the one who approached her first, but Armstrong swooped in and stole him from her in a way. Lex has always been attracted to Amie and as you learn from their background stories: Lex and Armstrong don't have the best relationship. It's like Armstrong went after Amie just to get under Lex's skin. There's more linked to it with Armstrong's mom and Lex's mom, but man, learning about their childhood and Armstrong's behaviour, you really begin to not like him. It's not even a matter of being misunderstood, he is just downright an asshole. Despite him trying to worm his way back into Amie's life and attempts to justify his actions, Amie holds her ground and does not let him manipulate her. I loved that she didn't take crap from him and made it very clear that they were done with one another. So even though, her and Lex's story was quite lovely to read, I just loved how they both stood as fantastic characters on their own. Their story was soooo swoonworthy. I was grinning ear to ear with some moments and I just loved how attentive and sweet Lex was with her. Their falling in love with so sweet and respectful and the complete opposite from what she had with Armstrong. I loved that they were able to respect one another's boundaries and come together stronger in the end. I didn't want their story to end and I could honestly read about them forever. Overall, I loved this book and I was so terribly sad when it was over. It had everything I wanted in a contemporary romance: some hilarious moments, a great female lead, a sweet and sexy male lead, and other interesting components that made it feel more than a romance novel at times (I really liked learning about the hotel and resort business). There are also so many beautiful moments in the text. Like really beautiful. Like put up a quote up on your wall kind of beautiful. I can't say enough good things about this book. It is definitely one of my favorite romance reads of this year and I just LOVED it. I can't wait to sit down and have a reread again soon. Please pick it up. You will not regret it! (Also.. I learned not too long after that Helena is a fellow Canadian, so that made me love her even more ;))

Review - It's Messy: On Boys, Boobs, and Badass Women by Amanda De Cadenet

It's Messy: On Boys, Boobs, and Badass Women by Amanda De Cadenet

Publishing Date: September 19, 2017
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 224
Biography/Memoir

The Premise from the Publisher: "In this deeply personal collection of essays, creator of the The Conversation Amanda de Cadenet shares the hard-won advice and practical insights she’s gained through her experiences as businesswoman, friend, wife, and mother. Amanda is on a mission to facilitate conversations that allow all women to be seen, heard, and understood. Through her multimedia platform The Conversation, she interviews some of today’s most bad ass women—from Hillary Clinton to Lady Gaga—in no-holds-barred conversations that get to the heart of what means to be female. Now, in It’s Messy, Amanda offers readers an extension of that conversation, inviting them into her life and sharing her own story. From childhood fame to a high-profile marriage (and divorce) to teen motherhood to the sexism that threatened to end her career before it started, Amanda shares the good, the bad, and the messy of her life, synthesizing lessons she’s learned along the way. Through it all, she offers an original perspective as a feminist on the front lines of celebrity culture. Edgy, irreverent, poignant and provocative, It’s Messy addresses the issues, concerns, and experiences relevant to women today" (HC).

My overall thoughts and review: I have to admit that I didn't know of Amanda before reading this book. I had saw that one of my managers raved about the book and I quickly read the description and I was intrigued. I haven't read a non-fiction book in a while, and with everything in our political climate at the moment, I was in the mood for some feminist essays. I think it was a good thing that I dove into this book without knowing anything about the author. I always find I enjoy those books most because I don't build some preconceived expectation for the book and the author. Immediately, I want to say how readable this text was. Amanda writes in such a way that felt like she was sitting next to me the entire duration having a candid conversation. She is incredibly open and honest and tells things like it is. I really appreciated learning about her childhood, her upbringing, and the path of her career. She reminds us we are not stuck in one role/career forever and that we continuously change as individuals and she encourages these changes. I really loved hearing about how she spoke with some strong women such as Hillary Clinton, Adrianna Huffington, Jane Fonda, and more. She had meaningful conversations with these women and didn't focus on things like fashion or what they would like to eat. She got to know them as an individual and I really enjoyed learning small tidbits she shared with us. I think what I really enjoyed most about this book was hearing from Amanda, her experience of being a mother and how raising children in a Trump world works. I'm no where near ready to be a mother, but she has definitely inspired me to parent a certain way when the time comes for me. I loved seeing how she also spoke about body issues, PPD, and sense of self through the lens of motherhood. My favorite chapters were definitely "Diets That Don't Work but Do Give You a Bunch of Weird Health Problems (and Other Body Issues)" and "It's Never Okay." Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I'm totally now following Amanda on all social media outlets. I just really think this is a great book for many women because it highlights so many aspects of life. Amanda reaffirms your worries, reminds you that you are not alone, and most of all, empowers you.

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮✮ (4/5 stars)

[Teaser] Most Eligible Bastard by Annika Martin

Most Eligible Bastard, an all-new standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Annika Martin is coming November 7th!

He’s a powerful billionaire CEO who built the family business into an empire. The money doesn’t matter to him, but the company is his life. And then his eccentric mother wills it all to her tiny dog.

********
I’m Vicky, the dog whisperer. (Not really, but that’s what my elderly neighbor always says.) When she dies, she surprises everybody by leaving a corporation worth billions to her dog, Smuckers. With me as his spokesperson.

Suddenly I go from running my Etsy store to sitting in an elegant Wall Street boardroom with Smuckers in my lap. And my neighbor’s son, Henry Locke, aka New York’s most eligible bachelor, glaring across the table at me.

Rumor has it Henry’s a business genius who’s as talented in the bedroom as he is in the boardroom. Sure, he’s gorgeous. Sex-in-a-seven-thousand dollar suit. But…

He’s arrogant and infuriating.
He refuses to listen to me when I insist I didn’t con his mother.
He thinks he can bully me, buy me off, control me, even seduce me.

Henry may have the women of Manhattan eating out of the palm of his hand, but I'm so over entitled rich guys who think they own the world.

No way will his wicked smile be charming ME out of my panties.

His wicked...devastating...impossible-to-resist smile.

Oh well, who needs panties anyway?
