Pilot Elijah Lawson always knew he’d return to Jessamine, marry a hometown girl and settle into very predictable life. After all, he made promises to his parents that once he’d gotten his fill of adventure that he would do exactly that… and Eli was a man of his word. Only he's never been able to get the bewitching redhead he’d fallen hard for two years earlier out of his head and he’s afraid that no woman in Jessamine will ever measure up.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop his family from trying to set him up with every single woman in town… until Skye Holland shows up on his doorstep.

The only reason Skye Holland moved back to North Carolina was so she could do the right thing for her one year old son. A boy, after all, needed his father, while she… she simply needed a fresh start. But first, she has to let Eli know that their red-hot affair had consequences. Consequences she has no intentions of repeating, no matter how many old feelings come rushing to the surface when they’re together.

Too bad for Skye that Elijah has other ideas and he’s not going to let this second chance at love get away again.

Review:
This is my first time reading a book by Marquita Valentine, and apparently this book is part of a series called the Lawson Brothers. This is book #8 in the series. I believe they can all be read as standalones since it just occupies the same world with the same characters, but it's a different couple and HEA story for each Lawson brother. Going into it, I was worried that I would miss a beat with some of the background regarding the Lawson family, but Valentine fills in the details nicely. You learn that Elijah and Skye had a brief and intense relationship when she up and left him one night with no explanation. Things are complicated three years later when she shows up on his doorstep with his baby. She wants to make sure the focus is on Miles and that's all, but she's finding it hard to just sweep old feelings behind. Elijah is incredibly sweet and makes you swoon. He's just a nice guy who will always do right by the people he loves. I love the relationship he builds with Miles, but also how supportive and understanding he is when it comes to Skye. Things do get rocky, but Elijah is so sure of his feelings that he doesn't let what happened before happen again. I'm not usually one for the pregnancy trope in romance novels, but they are slowly growing on me. I enjoyed how you see how they both fall in love, and you get to see them fall in love again, but as parents. I really like how straight to the point Valentine's writing is and after reading this, I definitely want to check out the stories of the other Lawson brothers. If you are a fan of the series, I think this will be a book you'll enjoy. If you haven't read Marquita Valentine before, I would definitely recommend you give it a shot!

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮✮ (4/5 stars)
