Outwardly, Noah Carter is riding high as the tech world’s hottest new genius. Inside, he’s still reeling from the abduction of his wife and baby daughter eight years ago, and then the devastating discovery of his child’s body. For years, he kept up hope that his wife was alive, but now that she’s been declared legally dead, he’s thrown himself even more deeply into his work, cutting himself off from emotional ties because they just hurt too damn much.

Then he meets Kiki Porter, an eternal optimist with a killer work ethic and dreams of fronting a band. And everything changes. Even though he tries his damnedest to fight it…

Sexually, they are combustible together. But their true fire is emotional, though it is a slow to burn. But once it lights, it is all consuming. The relationship grows emotionally, the sex is hot, things are good.

But just when it’s looking like they might have a real future together, the past comes back to haunt them. And Noah’s going to have to decide what he’s willing to give up for love …

Review:

This is my first novel by J. Kenner. I was definitely intrigued by the premise because I love a good second chance romance novel. The story follows Noah and Kiki, who were together ages ago and were genuinely good together. They were drawn to each other in such a strong way and they truly brought out the best in one another. Kiki was pursuing her musical career with her band but the rug is pulled from under them when Noah's ex-girlfriend announces that she is pregnant. Flash forward years later... Noah is now mourning the loss of his wife and child. His wife has been pronounced legally dead and he has been living with regret for his actions. He thinks back to maybe if he had stayed with Kiki then his wife and kid would still be alive. I felt really bad for Noah in these moments because he felt such an enormous amount of guilt for something he had no control over. As fate would have it, Kiki and Noah are reunited eight years later as they find themselves work side by side on a new project. They have both grown, but they are both still very much attracted (and in love) with one another. It was nice seeing how they tried to deny it at first which most stories tend to do. I loved that Noah didn't give up and was truly committed to making a relationship with them work again. I will say it was expected what comes back from the past to haunt them, so I wasn't too surprised there. Overall, I really enjoyed their story and seeing how they came back to one another. I really loved Noah as a character and he's definitely the swoony male lead I look for in romance books. I can't wait to see what else Julie writes!

My rating of the book: ✮✮✮½ (3.5/5 stars)
