This past weekend, a bunch of book bloggers gathered at the Bloor-Gladstone Library to hear about some new and upcoming excited reads coming Winter & Spring of 2018. The event was hosted by Raincoast Books, and for the Toronto one, we had the lovely Jenn from Lost in a Great Book & Vanessa from Ampersand Inc. as our great hosts!
We watched the livestream of the actual event happening in Vancouver and we also got a nice author visit from Lianne Oelkei who came to talk about her new release Nice Try, Jane Sinner. She spoke about her writing process and it was so nice to hear how candid she was about everything and her overall experience and struggles. I was definitely intrigued before, but I know now, I'm definitely going out release date to get a copy of the book.
Here are some highlights of some upcoming releases that I am most excited for:
Busted by Gina Ciocca (Jan 1/18) - A teen becomes a 'snoop for hire' catching cheaters. What happens when the guy she spies on is actually falling for her? This has been compared to Jenny Han, Siobhan Vivian, and Morgan Matson.
Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann (Jan 23/18) - Alice is asexual but things change when she meets Takumi. This is a SwoonReads title, so I'm excited to see where this one goes!
Your One & Only by Adrianne Finlay (Feb 6/18) - sci-fi read about clones and tackles provocative questions like what makes us human? Blurbed as being Never Let Me Go meets Orphan Black.
Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp (Jan 2/18) - Corey returns home to learn that her best friend dies. She has to decipher all the secrets and find out what happened to her best friend. Setting is Alaska!
A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena (Feb 27/18) - I LOVE this cover so much. It is fascinating and disturbing and focuses on slut-shaming and bullying. Also, YAY for a Canadian author!
Miles Away From You by A.B. Rutledge (March 20/18) - "If you need a good cry" and said to be perfect for fans of Jandy Nelson & Adam Silvera. ALL THE YES.
Zombie Abbey by Lauren Baratz-Logsted (April 3/18) - zombies meets Downton Abbey? Sign me up please. Instead of Downton, you get Porthampton and you get the upstairs/downstairs narrative you love so much.
Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake (May 15/18) - focuses on sexual assault, misogyny, patriarchy, and the importance of female friendships. There needs to be more books like this and I always commend authors who tackle this difficult topic.
Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke (Jan 9/18) - Becky Albertalli loved this book, so I'm pretty sure I will love this book. Jane attempts a Big-Brother type game show to win a car and reinvent herself.

These are only a few titles among all the amazing ones coming out next year. I love that we are getting such great books tackling dark topics. We also came home with some great swag bags, and I got two exciting reads to check out as well. (I will be sure to give these reads a review closer to release date for them) Many thanks again to Raincoast Books for a lovely Saturday afternoon and to Jenn & Vanessa for being our great hosts!
