The Two of Us is an enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend standalone romance set in the current affairs of history in the making. Though the character’s storyline is fiction, the circumstances are very real, and we’re sensitive to this topic. This is a story about hope, love, and so much more with a guaranteed happily ever after!
My Review:
The premise of this novel was what sold me alone. I love a good enemies to lovers trope, and how it is often the case of perceptions and miscommunication, but close-quarters/being stuck together allows for reconciliation. The story follows Cami, who is the heir to her family's fashion company, and she leaves NYC, the center of the pandemic, to her family's cabin to finish her schoolwork and just to get away. However, she finds herself rooming with her brother's friend, Eli. Eli escapes from NYC as well because he has been dealing with roommates who aren't social distancing and he wants to be somewhere safe. They have known each other since childhood, but they have always gotten off on the wrong foot, and it's kind of nice to see them have that banter together, but also warm up to one another. They also both come with adorable pets and I just loved how they added to the story. You get to see them both get to know one another again, and in a different way that shifts perceptions of what they had of one another. They also relive certain moments in their past through new lens. I loved seeing them come together during this time.. I especially love that Eli worked to get Cami out of her comfort zone by getting her to cook and learn to fix things up. He really helped her realize that she should just be herself and not a version of herself that she thinks she should be based on what people think. Eli and Cami's story was hopeful, sweet, and sexy.
That being said, I do want to say that the book follows the current circumstances of the world with covid-19, and it's impact on people. It speaks to the struggles that the healthcare workers are facing in areas such as NY, and how some are not adhering to the rules in place. It is definitely a sensitive topic because it is our "now" - and I will say that it made it hard to read the book at times. I felt and still feel incredibly anxious as Cami does during this time, and while the book does give a hopeful message that we can overcome this, I do want to say that be understanding of the fact that it does situate itself in our current climate, and with that comes certain sensitivities and feelings.
Overall, this was a nice little escape during this weird time in our world. You got to see a story of two people who realize they are very right for each other, and see them come together to be better versions of themselves. I also love that I can count on KF to always deliver on strong friendships and good family relationships, the side characters always add so much more to the story, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the stories in the series add in to the greater narrative.
My Rating: ✮✮✮✮ - 4/5 stars
