Review: Discretion by Karina Halle

Discretion (The Dumonts #1) by Karina Halle

Publishing Date: August 6, 2019
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Pages: 288
Contemporary Romance

The Premise from the Publisher: "From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes a delicious saga of wealth, luxury, and scandal—and the wicked secrets of success behind an envied family dynasty. The Riviera means indulgence—if you’ve got money. For Sadie Reynolds, a down-on-her-luck student, the Riviera means dingy hostels and back streets. When a wrong turn puts her in jeopardy, the last thing she expects is to be saved by the most handsome stranger she’s ever locked eyes with. When she later wakes up in a luxury suite with a Mediterranean view, she’s in the tender care of her rescuer: Olivier Dumont, France’s most eligible bachelor, billionaire hotelier, and heir to the Dumont fashion fortune. Olivier also owns his reputation for scandal. But Sadie is unlike any woman he’s ever met. Her humble persona and wild innocence promise real passion. He’s promising Sadie something too: anything she wants. From Bordeaux to Cannes to Paris, Sadie’s past in America is swept away and replaced with a fantasy too good to be true. Pulled into Olivier’s orbit of wealth, glamour, and excess, Sadie discovers that the Dumont dynasty comes with a legacy of wicked secrets. And Olivier’s secrets may be the most damning of all…" (Montlake Romance).

My overall thoughts and review: I've only ever read one book by Karina Halle, and that was Hot Shot, which you can find my full review for here! I was really excited to be working with Thomas Allen & Son to review this book because I loved the last thing I read by Halle, so I knew going into this, it would be a great romance read. The premise is super interesting as it follows a family dynasty essentially, and all the drama that comes along with it. I loved that The Dumonts have a lot to them - there's a fashion line, a hotel line, and more. I just love a billionaire-type lead and seeing them spoil the female lead. This story follows Olivier, who we learn from the very beginning, has a very dark secret that can affect his family and their dynasty. He's been pegged as the playboy by most tabloids, and he has found it easier to just let people think what they want. On a chance meeting, he ends up saving Sadie from a person who attempted to mug her while she is backpacking through Europe. Sadie is there alone because she learned midway through her trip that her now ex-boyfriend had been cheating on her. She is used to slumming it and feels a strong sense to simply finish the trip and get back home to her mom and school. I really loved that Sadie didn't immediately fall for all of what Olivier was offering, but instead was reluctant. It took some time to win her over, and in the end, it wasn't the money, the hotel, the luxurious lifestyle that drew her in, but simply Olivier. They just both opened up more during their time together and you got a sense of who they really were as their relationship developed. I loved their chemistry a lot, and goodness me, the first scene on the boat was incredibly steamy! Halle knows how to write steamy scenes y'all. While the story does have the family drama laced throughout as the main plot driving point (kind of reminds me of Gossip Girl with the dramatic family dynamics which I love), I just loved how much character growth we got for both Sadie and Olivier. I love their love story so much and I am now eagerly awaiting the sequel to the book for Seraphine's story (Olivier's sister). I'm also hoping that in the sequel we'll get to see Olivier and Sadie again! I loved this book a lot, and I would highly recommend.. no.. I strongly urge you to get your hands on a copy ASAP so that we can gush over it! It is the perfect mix of drama, love story, and steaminess! *heart eyes emoji x100*

[Blog Tour] A Highlander Walks into a Bar by Laura Trentham

A Highlander Walks Into a Bar (Highland, Georgia #1) by Laura Trentham

Publishing Date: July 30, 2019
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: 320
Contemporary Romance

The Premise from the Publisher: "The timeless romance, soaring passion—and gorgeous men—of Scotland comes to modern-day America. And the rules of love will never be the same… Isabel Buchanan is fiery, funny, and never at a loss for words. But she is struck speechless when her mother returns from a trip to Scotland with a six-foot-tall, very handsome souvenir. Izzy’s mother is so infatuated by the fellow that Izzy has to plan their annual Highland Games all by herself. Well, not completely by herself. The Highlander’s strapping young nephew has come looking for his uncle… Alasdair Blackmoor has never seen a place as friendly as this small Georgia town—or a girl as brilliant and beguiling as Izzy. Instead of saving his uncle, who seems to be having a lovely time, Alasdair decides he’d rather help Izzy with the Highland Games. Show her how to dance like a Highlander. Drink like a Highlander. And maybe, just maybe, fall in love with a Highlander. But when the games are over, where do they go from here?" (SMP).

My overall thoughts and review: When I first read the premise of this book, I instantly thought of Melonie Johnson's Getting Hot with the Scot (which you can find my full review for here). I love a good book with a swoony Scottish lead and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this book actually takes place in Highland, Georgia instead. Because of the name of the location, every year in this small southern town, they hold the Highland Games, which the female lead of the story, Izzy, and her mother, Rosie, plan together. However, plans get complicated when her mother Rosie returns home from a trip with a souvenir of sorts - a new Scottish boyfriend. Along with him comes his nephew, Alasdair, who has been sent to this small town to fetch his uncle back home. They start to bond over the course of the time they spend together and I just really loved all the discussions they had with one another in terms of life and career. Doing what you should, what is expected of you, or risking it all, and simply doing what you love. I love when the couples in romance novels bond and discuss actual real life issues and I love when they are supportive with one another too. There are so many laugh out loud funny moments in this book, so brace yourself. Izzy's personality is awesome and she definitely has no filter. I loved seeing her come to terms with the fact that her mother is in fact a human and can have feelings, but also I loved seeing her realize her own feelings as well. This was a fun summer romance read that gives you that wanderlust feeling and reminds you that it can happen right at home. There's great family dynamics and I loved the secondary characters that popped up as well, like Izzy's friend. Overall, it was a really great contemporary romance read and I can't wait to check out the next book in this series by Trentham! I also totally want to visit both Highland and Scotland now. If you loved Johnson's Getting Hot with the Scot, you'll definitely want to add this one to your TBR!

Batch Reviews #16

The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai (✮✮✮✮½ - 4.5 stars)
Publishing Date: August 6, 2019
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 400

My Review: One of my #supersexybookclub gals has been telling me about Alisha Rai for a while now, but my TBR list is absolutely ridiculous so I was grateful that one landed on our reading list for book club. This book was so much fun and I definitely can't wait to check out other books by Rai now. This book looks into modern dating, via apps and online websites. As someone who has been in a monogamous relationship for almost a decade, I do count myself incredibly lucky daily that I didn't have to go through all the apps and websites. That being said, I don't see a negative in either because I know many friends who have successful relationships from them. I really appreciated learning a lot about how this approach to dating worked, how people looked at it, and which one had perks and benefits. Ultimately, these apps and websites, get your foot in the door, but the book reminds us that it takes hard work and trust that comes after, that leads to a successful relationship. I loved Rhiannon and Samson's story a lot! They just have great rapport with one another, and I loved seeing them together, but on their own, they were fantastic leads. You got to see them interact with their closest friends and see how much family and friendship meant to them. I also really loved that the book focused a bit on CTE because Samson is a retired football player, and it's something I didn't have awareness of before, but grateful to have now. Overall, this was a funny, sweet, sexy, and heartwarming look into ~modern~ romance. I can't wait to see what comes next in this series!

The Summer House by Jenny Hale (✮✮✮ - 3 stars)
Publishing Date: May 7, 2019
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Pages: 288

My Review: This is my first time reading something by Jenny Hale and the setting of a B&B in a seaside town definitely interested me. The story follows Callie, who has bought a childhood home with her best friend, Olivia, and they both decide to fix up the property into a beautiful B&B. Callie is the last person to be thinking of a romantic relationship, but she finds herself in a little meet cute with Luke. Luke is a Sullivan, and a really successful heir to a real estate empire. Callie has only ever read about Luke in gossip magazines, but they have an instant connection. The house that Callie bought also comes with secrets, as the previous owners leave a journal and an old locked box there. As she gets closer to Luke, she also uncovers more secrets from the items left behind. I would say that this was a feel good love story, but it didn't feel like a romance read to me. If you are expecting a steamy book, this is definitely not one unfortunately. That being said, it was nice to see how the characters had strong family ties. The book also touched on the pressures you might feel from family as well. In terms of family dynamics, I would say the book handled it really well. That being said, while I enjoyed this read, I didn't particularly love it. It did conclude in a way that I would remark as "too HEA." However, if you are someone who just wants a good love story with family dynamics, I would say this is the read for you!

Sisters of Summer's End (Summer Resort #2) by Lori Foster  (✮✮✮✮ - 4/5 stars)
Publishing Date: June 11, 2019
Publisher: HQN Books
Pages: 368

My Review: I read the first book in this series last summer (you can find my full review here) and I was so excited to dive back into the world of Cooper's Charm. They also totally suck me in with having dogs featured on the cover and in the story as well. This time around, it follows two different female leads and their love stories: Maris, the owner of Summer's End camp shop, who we met in the last book, and the coordinator of the resort, Joy. Joy is a single mom to a cute boy named Jack, and she finds herself drawn to the owner of the drive-in, Royce. Maris, on the other hand is trying to convince herself that she is not interested in one of her fellow employees, Daron. I really liked that the beginning of this story focused firstly on Maris and Joy becoming better friends and confidantes for one another. You learn a bit about their pasts, and it's so nice to see that they are able to lean on one another, and really become sisters like the book title suggests. This was definitely one of those feel good novels. There's a bit of family drama laced throughout, but it's so nice to see the community of Cooper's Charm come together and see how the two love story lines developed. I really enjoyed this and I really hope Foster decides to write more about other characters at this resort!

[Blog Tour] Making Up by Helena Hunting - Review

Making Up by Helena Hunting
Publishing Date: July 16, 2019
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: 448
Contemporary Romance

The Premise from the Publisher: "Cosy Felton is great at her job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list. Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him. As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City, Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world" (SMP).

My Review: If you know me, then you'll know that one of my favorite male heroes ever in romance is Helena Hunting's Lex from Hooking Up. It was the first book I ever read from Helena and from there began my love affair with her writing! She writes such down-to-earth, hilarious, and relateable characters. I was so excited that she decided to write more in the Shacking Up series because Griffin is the last Mills brother for us readers to meet, and that also means I get to see snippets of the other couples that I've met and loved (ok, let's be serious, I wanted more Lex any way I could get him). This follows Griffin who has recently been broken up with by his fiancee who travels to Vegas for work (he's a hotel mogul). While there he is sent to a sex-shop to get some gag gifts for a bachelor party. There he meets Cosy, the sales person, and he's immediately drawn to her. They had a really adorable meet cute, and I knew I liked her from the very beginning. She's very sassy, but also very vulnerable. From there, they decide on a no-strings attached relationship, but that never goes as planned does it? While I love Helena's writing and I did love both characters a lot, there were moments when I felt the drama was too much to handle in the book. I felt like this couple could not catch a break at all. I will say it does remind me again too that age is just a number, and it's more about how you feel that is important. However, despite the drama, you also really see the importance of family come through with the Mills family, and I loved seeing them all together again. You also get to meet Lincoln, who is Armstrong's brother, and the male lead of the next book in the series, Handle with Care (which comes out next month!!). If you are a Helena Hunting fan, you'll def enjoy this read. It's fun, laugh-out-loud funny, and sexy!

Special Excerpt of the Book!
We’re a couple of minutes away from my apartment, which also means we’re almost at the end of our date. End-of-date protocol often means a goodnight kiss.
And I’ve eaten onions. Lots of them. What the hell was I thinking? I feel around in my shorts pocket, hoping I have a random stick of gum. I find a tiny square packet and pull it out, along with an old tissue. I shove that back in my pocket and sigh with relief as I carefully open the Listerine Pocketpak. There’s one strip left. I pop it in my mouth, wishing I had water since my mouth is dry and I’m suddenly super nervous.
Griffin pulls up in front of my apartment building. I swallow a bunch of times, trying to get the strip to dissolve on my tongue and glance out the tinted window, seeing it from his perspective. I don’t live in a bad part of town, but I sure as hell wouldn’t leave this car sitting out here for any length of time unless I wanted it keyed or stripped down.
Griffin shifts into park and turns to me, one hand resting on the back of my seat near the headrest. “I had a great time, Cosy.”
“Me too, thanks for dinner.” I tried to fork over my share, but he was quick on the credit card draw.
“It was my pleasure.” He leans in the tiniest bit, a nonverbal cue that he’s going in for a kiss.
I mirror the movement, giving him the go ahead. My stomach flutters in anticipation. I exhale slowly through my nose. Even though the Listerine strip should be doing its job to mask the onions, I don’t want to ruin the moment by breathing that in his face.
His fingertips skim my jaw, and I close my eyes. And then his lips brush my cheek. I wait for them to move a couple of inches to the right, but after what feels like a lot of seconds—and is probably only a few—I crack a lid.
Griffin is still close, a wry smile on his lips and a smolder in his eyes.
“Seriously, that’s it? A kiss on the cheek?”
His smile widens, making his eyes crinkle at the corners. He’s nothing like the guys I usually end up on dates with. College boys don’t take things slow. If I were out with one of the guys from school, I’d be sitting in a beat-up Civic with some stupid music playing, and he’d be all over me with his tongue halfway down my throat, copping a feel.
“I thought all the onions you ate were the equivalent to garlic for vampires.” Griffin fingers my hair near my shoulder. I’d really like him to finger something else. Wait. I mean I’d like to feel his hands on me. Not in my pants. Okay, maybe I’d like them in my pants, but not after date number one.
“I wasn’t thinking, and I really like onions. A lot. In hindsight, it’s not a great date food. I feel kinda dumb. And I guess at first I wasn’t so sure about you. How was I supposed to know you’d actually be kind of normalish?”
“Normalish?”
“Well, you drink club soda on purpose, so you can’t be all there.” I tap his temple.
Griffin circles my wrist with his fingers and drops his head, lips brushing over my knuckle. “We can’t all be perfect, now, can we?”
“I suppose not, and perfect is boring.”
“That it is.” He hums against my skin, and I feel it through my entire body. “I would like to try that kiss again, if you’re still interested.”
